Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about sex.
Sex is something that people shouldn’t have until they are married. And even after they are married, sex should be as boring as possible so they don’t want to have it for any reason other than procreation. No moving, no saying anything, certainly no “experimentation.” And you should be ashamed if you ever talk about sex. Just tell your kids not to have sex until they are married, and they will certainly comply. And the sex they don’t have certianly won’t result in an unwanted pregnancy which certainly won’t result in an abortion. And even though it is becoming increasingly available, teenagers won’t watch pornography, because that would be immoral. Just in case, pornography and pre-marital sex should both be illegal. Not only because they are immoral, but also because they, like gay marriage, are what is causing the U.S.’s massive debt and economic underperformance.
Yes, the reason the U.S. is so indebted and why its economy is so poor is that people have sex before marriage, watch pornography, and get married to someone of the same sex. Those things have voided America of morals and ruined society, which is why Obama was re-elected. Therefore, moral issues underly economic ones.
In case you couldn’t tell, that was satire. However, the conclusion is important. Obama was re-elected because of American society being corrupted by poor morals. I just want to make clear what exactly the poor morals are that did the corrupting. The proliferation of sexuality throughout society probably does have something to do with that, although I would argue that that is more of a symptom of the main problem than the problem itself (by the way, I have no idea if there is actually anyone who would make the above argument. I can think of instances in which a similar argument has been made, but the above is quite exaggerated).
Sex is an action. It has consequences. If you aren’t careful, it could result in pregnancy or STD’s. However, even if you become pregnant or acquire an STD, you can just get an abortion or have the government pay for your STD treatment. You are no longer expected to pay for the consequences of your irresponsibility to the extent you once were. And that is the problem.
Much of the talk about morality misses the point. There is too much pornography, God isn’t allowed in schools, gays are getting married, people are having pre-marital sex… it all misses the point. The point is that people expect the government to take care of them. They go to the government to solve thier problems for them. I’ll grant that religion might be a good way to instill the value of self-reliance, but you know what else is? Capitalism. As long as the government is bigger than it needs to be, people aren’t forced to look after themselves (or go to their families or private charities for help. Those things work because they don’t have an incentive to keep you dependent on them). Furthermore, capitalism allows for religion, like most other things, to compete in the free market. If government has no involvement with religion whatsoever, it has no power to impede religion. And, if it is a good religion, people will continue to believe in it. If it isn’t, then they will choose another religion or choose to opt out of religion entirely. I know religious people wouldn’t be happy with that, but many people would be, and it probably wouldn’t happen anyway.
I honestly think a lot of people need to believe in some sort of higher power (whether it is God or the government), because the thought of self-reliance frightens them (other people find it empowering, though). Given that premise, a weakening of government would likely result in a strenghtening of religious bodies. While I would rather live in a rational, secular, capitalist society, I would rather live in a religious but capitalist society than a secular but statist society. That way, at least, the “higher power” would have no power over me. Besides, social norms (as long as they aren’t reinforced by the government) should be free to compete with each other in the free market. That is the freedom of conscience, the most important of the natural rights.
So, if not sex, how did things get this way? My guess is unions (yes, it’s a cliché). You see, unions get workers more stuff (money, benefits, etc) for less work. I’m not saying that is necessarily a bad thing, but the societal ramifications certainly are. I’m all for workers getting paid more, but I’d prefer they earn it through hard work, competence, good ideas, etc. And, as long as they aren’t public sector employees, they always have the freedom to join unions (or not) regardless. At least that way, the unions aren’t given an advantage by government support of them (as far as I can tell, the close relationship between unions and governments started or strenghtened a lot in the 1930′s) (furthermore, at the moment, they have massive political power, which American unions universally invest in the Democrats. They award the Democrats with enorous campaign financing in favour of political favours that mostly benefit the very wealthy union leaders).
Anyway, a dependent society becomes complacent and dumb. Of course, this is what the left wants. That is the main reason Obama won. He shouldn’t have. He should have lost in a landslide, particularly considering his opponent was a person. Not only did Obama win because people benefit at the moment from him and the Democrats being power because they get free stuff, but he also won because those people have no foresight because they are complacent and dumb. They don’t know anything other than things they see on MSNBC, most of which isn’t true, so they don’t actually know anything. They don’t know anything about the current state of the U.S. government and economy, or the future state of the U.S. government and economy. They have no idea what is about to happen. And I, for one, am going to enjoy it (it sucks about everyone else, though). It might just be the lesson that will teach them good, old-fashioned morality (probably not, though).
